Josh Catania

Joshua Catania is a pianist, educator, author, and piano technician based in Connecticut. Joshua started playing the piano at age five and began writing original music soon after. In addition to his training in classical music, Joshua grew interested in jazz and began improvising at an early age. Hailing from Wisconsin, Joshua’s musicianship was nurtured by several important mentors in the Milwaukee music scene including Russ Johnson, Brian Lynch, Devin Drobka, and Roman Kontorovsky. He attended the Kettle Moraine School for Arts and Performance, the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra Jazz Studies program, and the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music Jazz Institute.
Joshua decided to further his education at the University of Michigan, where he studied jazz piano with Andy Milne, Ellen Rowe, Andrew Bishop, and Robert Hurst. Alongside his studies, Joshua performed actively in the Michigan jazz scene at venues such as Cliff Bells, the Blue Llama Jazz Club, the Kerrytown Concert House, the Detroit Jazz Festival, and the Lansing Jazz Festival. Springing out of his collaborations in the Midwest, Joshua released his debut recording “Open To Now” under Shifting Paradigm Records. Of his release, USA Today wrote “The jazz pianist’s dazzling debut album twists and turns with the confidence and daring of a seasoned pro.”
Since moving to the Northeast, Joshua continues to perform across the region as a bandleader and with numerous local ensembles. As a jazz performer, Joshua has performed at Black Eyed Sally’s, Dewey’s Jazz Lounge, Cafe Nine, the Newport Jazz Festival, and the Litchfield Jazz Festival. Joshua also performs locally for weddings and events with his wife in The Catania Two.
As an educator, Joshua is passionate about helping piano students to grow and achieve their musical goals. For the last 10 years, he has taught beginning through advanced piano as well as jazz piano, pop, and contemporary keyboard styles, composition, and improvisation.
